Leader Of Opposition, Hon Mathias Mpuuga has requested for a Parliamentary sitting over the fuel crisis going on in the Country.
“The Country is facing a fuel Crisis, several fuel stations across the country have run out of fuel while those with stock are charging exorbitant prices, there is looming risk of a country shutdown in the event that urgent interventions are not undertaken to address the crisis,” Mpuuga says in his letter written to the Rt.Hon. Speaker of Parliament on Wednesday.
He added that their is a public outcry across the country that demands that the people’s representatives are recalled from recess to share their constituency experiences, offer leadership, engage Government and contribute to solving the crisis.
Hon. Mpuuga says as provided under Rule 21, a petition signed by atleast a third of members is required to recall members from recess.
He encouraged the Speaker of Parliament to implore use of it’s powers to recall the House earlier than the communicated date of 27th January 2022 as the prices are escalating and require urgent attention before it manifests into a huge economic and security crisis.
Since last week, there has been a spike in fuel prices as some fuel stations around Kampala are selling Premium Petrol known as V-Power by some distributors were selling it above Shs5000, some country side areas are selling it at Shs10,000, of which many outlets have already run out of fuel.
Hundreds of Fuel trucks were stuck on the Eastern Border in Malaba and Busia, with truck drivers complaining of the massive queues as officials are carrying out mandatory coronavirus testing.
Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa said that the border delays were caused by faulty scanners used by custom officials to check vehicles, and issues regarding Covid-19.
Yesterday, fuel trucks had started moving to Uganda as the Country remains at pose wondering whether fuel prices will reduce even when these trucks have been released.
